YUESHUIAN · Light Poetry Retreat

VILLA & MANSION
CHINA
2025
“Light Poetry Retreat” is a benchmark villa lighting design project located in Chongqing, covering an area of 1,200 square meters. Centered around the philosophy of “Let Light Become the Poet of Space,” the project completely redefines traditional lighting logic, elevating light and shadow themselves into the protagonists that shape emotions and narrate the passage of time.

Through the extensive use of concealed linear lighting, indirect illumination, and natural light filtering techniques, the design creates a cascading “Waterfall of Light” in the double-height living room, establishes a sense of ritual in the dining area through candlelight, and achieves a healing, enveloping atmosphere in the bedrooms through a main-light-free approach. Movable shoji screens and wooden lattices become “filters” and “frames” for light, sculpting rich layers of light and shadow that transform daily living into a tranquil ritual of dialogue with light itself.

Ultimately, the space transcends the concept of a physical residence and becomes a spiritual sanctuary where time slows down, and the mind returns to serenity, demonstrating how light can become the most luxurious and therapeutic material in a high-end private residence.

Lighting Design Story

In an era defined by forests of steel and concrete, our longing for “home” has long surpassed the need for physical shelter. Instead, we seek a spiritual homeland where time can slow down.

This 1,200㎡ villa project in Chongqing, designed by YUE DESIGN and refined through lighting design by HERTZ, takes “Light Poetry Retreat” as its core concept. Here, light and shadow become the poets of space, composing a harmonious dialogue between nature and contemporary living upon a restrained and elegant foundation. The rhythm of light, the breathing of materials, and the relaxation of human life together weave a tangible philosophy of tranquility.

Double-Height Living Room: A Natural Theater of Light

Spatial Design
The soaring volume transforms architecture into a stage for light. Expansive panoramic windows frame the greenery outside as living artwork, while curved sofas and boucle lounge chairs soften the architectural structure, creating a philosophy of seamless connection between interior and nature.

Lighting Application

Natural Light as Director
A specially designed “Dream Curtain” acts as a filter for light, transforming direct sunlight into soft, hazy Morandi-inspired tones. As time changes throughout the day, it casts patterns of light and shadow across walls and floors resembling harp strings or rippling water.

Artificial Light as Focus
An elevated sky corridor and suspended circular metal luminaires serve as visual anchors. At dusk, natural sunlight and artificial lighting merge to create a cascading “Waterfall of Light.” Reflections on the floor fluctuate with the movement of light, forming what appears to be “folds of time.”

Dining Area: A Quiet Ritual of Light

Western Dining Room
Design
Soft white drapery and artistic arrangements of dried branches create a Wabi-Sabi-inspired atmosphere.

Lighting
Candles serve as the primary focal light source. Their flickering warm glow resembles scattered stars, working together with the soft filtered light through the drapery to elevate everyday dining into a “ritual of light” that allows one to touch the passage of time.
Chinese Dining Room

Design
Wooden lattice screens act as spatial frames, creating a semi-enclosed sense of privacy. A circular ceiling composition and an array of spherical metallic pendant lights form the visual centerpiece of the room.

Lighting
Light from the pendants casts rippling patterns across the dark walls. The cool metallic sheen contrasts with the matte texture of the surfaces. The copper-toned halo of floor lamps serves as an accent, enriching the dialogue between materials within the tranquil atmosphere.

Leisure Areas and Corridors: Artistic Framing Through Light

Design
Wooden lattices and curved openings create layered visual frames, generating a sense of revelation and concealment throughout the space. The arrangement of furniture and artworks resembles casual notes from daily life, bringing a natural sense of freedom and breathability.

Lighting
The lattices themselves become “light sieves,” filtering and dividing illumination into orderly lines of light and shadow. Along the corridors, a playful children's stroller is intentionally juxtaposed with a contemplative artwork. Under a unified lighting atmosphere, this contrast creates a unique aesthetic tension while subtly nurturing artistic awareness.

Private Retreat Level: The Healing Embrace of Light

Master Bedroom (The Ultimate Interpretation of the Retreat)
Design
The space embraces extreme minimalism and generous blankness. A completely main-light-free approach creates room for meditation, reading, and quiet reflection.

Lighting
Concealed linear lighting flows gently along the edges of ceilings and walls, creating a soft, uniform, glare-free halo of illumination. Floor lamps and small pendant lights are selectively introduced as supplementary lighting. Both color temperature and brightness are carefully calibrated to promote relaxation, transforming the room into a true retreat.

Bathroom (A Healing Ritual of Light)
Design The bathroom combines the rugged texture of crystal blue-grey stone slabs with the warmth of white marble featuring golden veining, creating a strong contrast between materials.

Lighting

Use of Natural Light

Light entering through the blinds is filtered into rhythmic bands of illumination, acting like “carving knives of time” that sculpt dynamic patterns across walls and floors.

Enhancement Through Artificial Lighting
The lighting design reinforces the textural contrast between materials. Circular mirror lights and wall sconces provide functional illumination while transforming daily routines into a healing ritual of dialogue with light and shadow, creating a semi-private and immersive atmosphere.

Transitional and Circulation Spaces: Guiding Movement Through Light

Staircase and Double-Height Area
Design
The staircase area utilizes simple materials such as cement stone slabs, emphasizing structural fluidity and sculptural expression.

Lighting
Concealed linear light strips outline the structure along stair treads and walls. Light becomes an invisible guide that directs visual attention and circulation while creating an ongoing dialogue between the double-height void and the upper and lower levels.

Shoji Screens and Wooden Lattices

Design
Movable shoji screens serve as one of the project's key design elements, functioning as spatial filters.

Design Philosophy: Light as the Poet, Retreat as the Realm

Design Philosophy: Light as the Poet, Retreat as the Realm
The essence of “Light Poetry Retreat” lies in allowing design to step into the background while light and life become the true protagonists.

Here, light is not merely a tool for illumination; it is regarded as the “poet” of the space.

Morning Light Writes Hope
Soft morning sunlight filters through the windows, casting delicate poems of light and shadow across walls and floors.

Evening Glow Recites the Journey Home
The afterglow of sunset intertwines with interior lighting, draping the space in a warm golden veil.

The Retreat Holds Harmony
The space is not an empty container, but a realm where nature, materials, and people resonate through a shared aesthetic of relaxation, allowing residents to experience a healing state where self and surroundings become one.

Key Lighting Strategies: The Grammar of Light and Shadow

Light Sculpting
Architectural elements such as lattices, blinds, and shoji screens are used to cut, filter, and reshape light, generating rich patterns of light and shadow that actively participate in the composition of space.

Material Dialogue
Lighting precisely reveals the textures of various materials, including the ruggedness of stone, the warmth of wood, and the cool elegance of metal. Through contrast between brightness and darkness, the dramatic interaction of materials is amplified.

Atmosphere Programming
The lighting environment in each area is carefully programmed. Public spaces become a symphony of natural and artistic light, while private areas provide a calm and enveloping atmosphere. Together, they support the overarching emotional goal of slowing down time and enhancing well-being.

Smart Integration
A whole-house intelligent lighting system enables scene-based control, allowing residents to switch between different lighting environments with a single touch according to activities and moods.

Writing Poetry Through Light and Time

Within this project, “Light Poetry Retreat” is more than a design theme—it is a complete design and lighting methodology. It demonstrates that the true luxury of a high-end private residence does not lie in the accumulation of materials, but in the ability to create a poetic sanctuary where light and space nurture both body and mind.

Every flicker of light and shadow becomes an intimate conversation between the space and its inhabitants.
