Indoor Lighting Installation Guide: How to Install IP20 LED Strip

Aurora Jin.UpdatedJuly 29, 2026|8 mins Read
Anyone who has worked on interior lighting projects knows that LED strips may look simple, but improper installation leads to costly rework later. This is especially true for IP20 non-waterproof LED strips. Since they lack water resistance, every detail during installation directly affects final performance and service life. Understanding the correct installation process helps ensure that IP20 strip lights perform reliably in indoor lighting projects.
In this guide, we'll cover everything you want to know: selection, step-by-step installation, power connection, precautions, and FAQs.

What Is an IP20 LED Strip?
An IP20 LED strip is a non-waterproof LED strip designed for indoor dry environments. The IP rating tells you two things:
- IP = Ingress Protection (international standard IEC 60529)
- First digit "2": Protects against solid objects larger than 12.5mm (e.g., fingers)
- Second digit "0": No water protection whatsoever

Simply put, IP20 strip lights can only be used indoors where there is no moisture or humidity. They are suitable for dry locations like ceiling coves, under-cabinet lighting, display shelves, background wall slots, and commercial showcases.
Golden rule: If an IP20 LED strip gets exposed to water or prolonged high humidity, it will fail — and that damage is not covered by warranty.
Waterproof vs Non-Waterproof LED Strip Lights: What Are the Differences?
When selecting LED strips for a project, the decision comes down to one question: Will the strip light be exposed to water or moisture?
| Feature | IP20 LED Strip (Non-Waterproof) | Waterproof LED Strip (IP65/IP67/IP68) |
| Waterproof Protection | No | Yes |
| Installation Environment | Indoor dry spaces | Outdoor/humid areas |
| Flexibility | Higher (softer, bends easily) | Depends on protective layer |
| Typical Application | Interior decorative & commercial lighting | Outdoor landscape, bathrooms, kitchens |

How to Install an IP20 LED Strip?
We'll use cuttable IP20 LED strips as the example, as they are ideal for custom-length installations. COLORS Lighting offers several cuttable LED strip light series, including the Free-cutting series, CSP-linear series, COF-linear series, digital series, high-lumen series, ultra-long series, high-voltage series and more. The Free-cutting series LED strip is the most flexible, adapting to almost any irregular slot length. It can be cut anywhere, with a CRI >95 and high efficiency up to 150 lm/W.

Installation Steps
Step 1: Cut the appropriate length on the outside of the side of the minimum cutting point.
Note: Cut the LED strip at the minimum cutting unit.

Step 2: Solder the red and black wires on the LED light strip with an electric soldering iron or fix them on the LED strip with solder-free terminals.
Note: Pay attention to the positive and negative poles.

Step 3: Uncover the 3M glue release paper on the back of the LED light strip in proper order and stick it to the installation position.
Note:
- The mounting surface should be cleaned in advance.
- It is strictly forbidden to tear off the 3M glue release paper on the back of the LED light strip at one time.
- It is strictly forbidden to press lights or work when power is on.

How to Connect Power to an IP20 Strip Light?
Step 1: Install the power supply in a suitable location.
Note: Do not touch with wet hands to prevent electric shock.

Step 2: Connect the red and black wires of the LED light strip to the power supply.

Step 3: Turn on the power and light up the LED light strip.

Important Installation Precautions for IP20 LED Strip
1. Install in a space without chemicals like sulfur, acid, or halogen.
2. The ambient temperature of the product is -20 ~ 40°C.
3. The quality of the atmosphere should not be lower than the national secondary standard.
4. IP20 light strip (not waterproof) product is for indoor use only, and the air humidity should not exceed 55%.
5. To ensure the luminous effect, every five-meter-long strip should be connected to a driver.
6. During the installation process, pay attention to the positive and negative poles of the power cord, and do not connect them wrongly. The power output must be consistent with the product voltage.
7. Light strip products will release a lot of heat during use, and the product must be used in a ventilated environment.
8. Please pay attention to the operation. When the power is working, do not touch the AC power terminal to prevent electric shock.
9. To avoid the damaged components caused by surge voltage or unstable current, please use a stable driver to power up the LED strip.
10. It is recommended to use only 80% of the driver's electricity to protect the LED strip from damage caused by overload.
11. To ensure the long lifespan of the strip light, please do not pull the LED strip or driver wire hard during installation and use.
12. To ensure the life and reliability of the light strip, please do not bend it in an arc less than 60mm in diameter, and do not fold it in half to avoid damage to the lamp beads or breakage.

For non-user-replaceable light sources: The light source contained in this luminaire shall only be replaced by the LED strip manufacturer or his service agent or a similar qualified person.
